The Road To Our Ultra Debut

It’s less than a week until my first ultra marathon and I’m already a nervous wreck!

Everything doesn’t seem to be going as planned. Our family driver who we trained to support Noy and I on Saturday suddenly quit this morning. Counting the days made me realize that I my monthly visitor might pay a visit this weekend. Heaven forbid! In addition, I am nowhere near my target weight on D-Day. Crap!

On the brighter side of things, with the help of my brother-in-law-radiologist-to-be, Doc RJ, I was able to get an x-ray for both my shins. Both did not show any signs of being fractured! YES! I did find out the cause of the pain on my right heel and left ankle. Bony spurs have started to manifest and RJ said that it might cause some pain while running. I’m fine with that as long as I have Celebrex to counter the pain. I just cannot stand the thought of having a broken or fractured shin after running.

So, everything is almost set for our ultra debut. I just need to hit the grocery for the supplies plus buy Noy a pair of shades. I got his as I broke mine. Haha!

This is my checklist for the run. I’m sure an item or two slipped my mind. I already thought of one…My ever reliable Garmin! Need to edit. Oh and meds…Celebrex…Ok, I really need to edit the list.

Checklist T2N. Am I missing anything else?

Laziness has struck this ultra-runner wanna be and I don’t think I want to run anytime this week. I’ll just chill, sleep, eat, pray and dream of this day of madness.

Thank you to my Team CB Family for this banner! I ❤ You guys!

Nike We Run Manila 10k 2011

FINALLY, we’re one with the world! Well not really the world but 1 out of the 15 cities that Nike chose to hold their Nike We Run City 10k events at.

Nike We Run Manila 10k

Manila will be the 2nd pitstop of the Nike We Run City 10k global event. Our expected 8,000 runners will be part of the 150,000 runners from cities such as Seoul (South Korea), Santiago (Chile) and Monterrey (Mexico) that promises a unique experience combining running and music. Oh, this is definitely my cup of tea!

I had the privilege of attending the presscon for the event which was held at  Top Shelf, Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street. The event was hosted by Tricia Chiongbian and we were briefed by Ms. Mae Dichupa of Nike Philippines.

Tricia and Coach Rio

Together with details about the event, they had also showcased the new Nike Lunar Glide 3+. Oh I was drooling! I have 3 pairs of Nike Lunar Glides and I would not mind adding another one to my collection.

Now back to the event…

Nike Run Manila 10k is a night run which will be held at the Bonifacio Global City. Expect only the best for participants as the event will be organized by RunRio. At the end of the race the runners will be treated with performances by Chicosci, Parokya ni Edgar.

Primarily targeting youth runners, Nike will be conducting run clinics in various universities such as University of Santo Tomas and Jose Rizal University. Free run  clinics will also be held at the BGC. Follow @nikeph on Twitter or Nike Running Ph on Facebook for more details.

Earth Day Run & Beyond

Registration

During one of our training runs, hubby surprised me by asking if I can register him for Earth Day Run. He has not joined a race since the Takbo.ph Nightfest. I happily obliged and registered him for the 10k event. I wanted to join him but I was scheduled to do a recon run with running buddy turned coach, Maridol. A few days after, I changed my mind and decided to join him instead. My first choice was the 21k race but they ran out of kits so I registered for the same event as hubby, 10k.

I believe 10k is a perfect welcome back distance for Noy. We normally run this distance whenever we train together in Fort which, by the way, is turning out to be very enjoyable for the both of us. We’re back to our “run dates” and it’s as fun as I can remember it to be.

Race Day

My hubby got up at 330am. He actually woke up after his alarm rang. It was too damn early for me so I negotiated for a 415am wake up call from my kid’s nanny.

After some time, we were off to BGC. Hubby has a friend doing his first 10k so we walked around to look for him. Bumped into a few Takbo.ph friends. So much has changed in the running scene. I barely know any of the runners anymore. New blood! 🙂

Race Proper

Ran together with hubby and Doc Marvz. I saw Pepsi who I have not seen in a very long time! So happy to see her that we made beso while running. Haha! Noy saw Cary and Tris. It would be Cary’s 1st 10k. Yay! The run bug did it again!

I ran ahead as I found myself enjoying tremendously. I get to run on top of my favorite Kalayaan flyover. Another yay! On the way back, I found myself running out of gas. I decided to take a break and walk. I enjoyed seeing more runner friends who joined the 21k event. So that’s where they are…

I slowly jogged towards the finish line. I missed my last 10k time of 1:17 by one minute and finished in 1:18. Not bad considering I’m so out of training, out of shape and had 10 pounds more baggage. Yes, I gained 10 freaking pounds and I am still working my butt off trying to incinerate ’em.

Post Race

As I crossed the finish line, it dawned on to me that finishing a race is still the best feeling anyone can get. It doesn’t matter if I failed to achieve my time but the fact that I finished what I started still gives me a high that’s probably comparable to my son’s 20 kisses…ok probably only 10 kisses.

A few minutes after, Cary and Tris arrives then a minute or 2 after, hubby arrives. We capped off the morning by having breakfast with Z and Marvin at Mercato Centrale and getting drenched by passing rain. Haha! What a morning!

I give the race 4/5.

Pros

-Ample hydration stations with Pocari Sweat. Although I honestly didn’t have much use for these as I had my own hydration source.

-Not too many runners

-Marshalls were aplenty

-Free race belt!

Cons

-Shirt quality was poor

-Some say there were not enough road signs and no km markers (not really applicable to me as I found that it had enough)

-Giveaways were so-so. Then again, I joined not because of the giveaways.

-Fee was a bit too steep for my taste. Then again they did have a free race belt plus RFID tag.

‘Til my next race. XOXO Runner Girl ;p

Stalling

Almost 3 weeks before the big run and I find my training stalled. I have been so busy with social functions, work has been neck deep, it’s been raining lately…Yadah yadah yadah…I seem to find all the excuses in the world.

This is not a good sign. Hubby is this close to just throwing the towel. I almost feel the same way which is why I need to go back on that training saddle again and just ride, I meant run.

And whenever I feel myself stalling again…I will have to imagine Maridol telling me to STOP these crazy thoughts and continue to train, run and be happy.

Maridol saying STOP! Resemblance is striking...J/K Dolly!

Day 3

My training program today was suppose to be a 30min cross training exercise. I started my day with a quick 10 set stair climbing routine. And ended it with a 6.8k run (1k warm up and 5.8k run) which I was scheduled to do tomorrow but decided to finish it tonight.

It was a warm and humid night. Hubby and I decided to run our usual route plus extra rounds around BHS. I really missed running with him. I am absolutely happy he’s back in the game or at least willing to try it out again 🙂

Accomplishments today:
1. Convinced Noy to finally say YES to T2N.
2. Convinced James to TRY to join the T2N run. He will join us during the recon run.
3. Made hubby run more than 5k! Yay!

Training rating: 7/10

Project Ultra

And another one bites the dust….after a lot of on and off discussions and cajoling from my team mates, I decided to join my first ever UltraMarathon. I don’t know what I was honestly thinking when I said yes to them. My chosen event for my Ultra debut is the Philippine Association of Ultramarathoners 50k Tagaytay to Nasugbu run on September 17. Yep! You read it right! It’s a mere over a month from now.

Months without training, I find myself joining races again. Well to be honest, I only joined one so far, the recently concluded NBAFit-Air21 Run. It was a great experience to be running under the rain. Truth be told, I didn’t know if I would finish it. I only chose the 10k event and yet, it was a challenge. Eventually when my second wind kicked in, it became smooth sailing 🙂 It was a fun, fun event! Hydration was aplenty. Two thumbs up for Runrio!

Some of you might be thinking, hey 50k is just 8k more than a full marathon and you already ran a full mary. To tell you honestly, it’s not the distance that scares me. It’s the thought of running under the heat, intense heat of the sun. I feel like I could actually melt! But it’s all in the mind right? I should tell myself that whenever I’m undergoing heat training.

Intense heat please end!

So without further ado, I now would like to formally kick off Project Ultra! I plan to share with everyone my experiences on this road to craziness 🙂

Wish me luck!

NBA Fit Air 21 Run

I recently attended the Blogger’s NIght for the NBA Fit Air 21 Run. I’ve been out of the running scene for months now and I really wanted to reconnect with old running “chummy” friends. I miss the company, the laughter and I really, truly miss running.

Out of all the invites (no, it’s not a lot!), I chose to attend this particular one, aside from the fact that I was actually had free time from work to grace the event, I was curious to know if any NBA personalities would show up. And did they? I will let you read about the fun run first 🙂

NBA Fit Air 21 Singlet Design --- Love it!

Will there be any NBA personalities during the event? YES! Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra, who happens to be half Pinoy, will be there!

As Carlo Singson, NBA Fit’s Country Manager said, Erik is here to devote time and effort to their goal in creating awareness and addressing obesity in the country. I believe that this is NBA Fit’s main mission worldwide, to help people stay in shape, to beat obesity and to live an active and healthy life.

And to answer the question if any NBA personalities appeared during the event…YES! Well, to make it clear, their AUTOGRAPHED Photos/Posters made it. Some of us even took them home. Lucky! 🙂 Will post photos soon!

See you at the starting line as I start my ultramarathon (cramming) training!

My Music, my iPods and Me

Music makes me move. That’s for sure.

When I started running 2 years ago, I had to look for a motivation for me to keep on running. Running sometimes looks like a mundane task. So prior to having a support running group, I relied on my iPod to keep me company.

My iPod Touch and I would hit the oval in ULTRA on a daily basis. Yes, music on my iPod kept me going. Now, 4 iPods later (touch, shuffle, nano 4G, nano 6G ), I am still hugely dependent on it for long runs.

With Brooks having a run green campaign, it comes to no surprise that they decided to partner with the Quezon Province Livelihood Bldg Project as the event’s beneficiary. This project recycles used PET bottles as a construction material in building structures.

When I was invited to the blogger’s night for this event, last Thursday, I did not expect them to share to us information about the products of Brooks. I was glad they did and it was very informative indeed.

We were told that Brooks is now the number 1 running shoe in the US. They were founded in 1914 and since 2001 has started to focus in the developing new technologies and innovation for running shoes. I have to admit that I was impressed with their AVPs on how they test their shoes, how their product differs from others, how it decreases our carbon footprint and how they bagged numerous awards from different organizations. While at the launch I was already excited to try on one of the pairs they had on display. I was tweeting: “Brooks DNA Technology rocks! I WANT ONE!”. I prayed hard and tried to picture myself owning one. And guess what happened?….

I am blessed to now own a pair of Brooks shoes. God heard my prayers and I won in the raffle. Yay! It’s not my size nor my style but the people behind Brooks Philippines (SRi) was kind enough to offer to change it for me. Double Yay! I look forward to running in my new Brooks!

I won!

I'll have it changed to my size and a more feminine style 🙂

It was a fun, fun evening with friends. I look forward to the next time I attend another event.

See you at the starting line!

Greenfield Clean Air Run — The 2nd Leg of the RunRio Series Manila

One thing I hate running within Metro Manila is the pollution. I used to love running from BHS to McKinley Hill and back but due to the traffic and the number of cars in Lawton, I now easily get turned off with the idea of running my usual route. Thankfully, I was able to find a new training area in the IS/British school areas

The call and beckoning of lush greenery, trees and the smell of clean air is so strong that I was really considering focusing on trail running. But I know running on uneven surfaces will injure my weak ankles further. This was the reason why the Dream TBR Marathon was the perfect race for my first marathon. It was done in Nuvali, Sta Rosa Laguna in the middle of nowhere. I love running in “nowhere” places 🙂

And now with the Greenfield Clean Air Run, I get to do that again.

The Greenfield run is back! And this time, they’re pushing their advocacy for cleaner air to another level.
